FUJITSUBO: When the Brand Name Is the Founder’s Own Surname

FUJITSUBO is one of the oldest names in Japanese aftermarket exhausts, and one of the more unusual: the brand is not an acronym or an abstract word, but the literal family name of the company that makes it.

A Name, Not a Brand Word

The company behind FUJITSUBO mufflers is Fujitsubo Giken Kogyo Co., Ltd. (藤壺技研工業株式会社), headquartered in Susono City, Shizuoka Prefecture — in the same Mt. Fuji foothills region as several other Japanese tuning manufacturers. As of a 2024 feature marking the company’s 90th anniversary, its president was named as Fujitsubo Masahiro (藤壺政宏). “Fujitsubo” (藤壺, meaning “wisteria urn/jar”) is the founding family’s actual surname, carried straight onto the product badge, rather than an invented brand name.

A 2024 industry feature described the company as having “reached its 90th year” (創業90年を迎えた藤壺技研工業株式会社), which implies a founding year around 1934, though we have not located a source that states the exact founding year and month directly, so we are treating “around 1934” as an inference rather than a confirmed date.

From Steel to Stainless

Industry coverage of the Japanese muffler market notes that FUJITSUBO, like most manufacturers, produced mufflers in mild steel through roughly the mid-1990s, after which stainless steel became the industry standard — a material shift that affected exhaust longevity and sound character across the whole aftermarket, not just this one brand. FUJITSUBO is also described in enthusiast and trade press as continuing to hand-build exhausts at its own factory rather than relying purely on automated production, and as supplying OEM manufacturers in addition to its aftermarket lines.

The brand’s product range spans entry-level “Authorize” mufflers through to titanium systems for cars like the R35 GT-R, the kind of titanium system referenced in the case below.

A Second, Unrelated “Fujitsubo”

Buyers researching this brand should be aware there is a second, completely unrelated company that also uses the “Fujitsubo” name in Japan: Fujitsubo Jidosha Kogyo (藤壺自動車工業), a classic-car shop in Fukuoka with its own roughly 87-year history. The two companies are not affiliated, and classic-car-shop content about Fujitsubo Jidosha Kogyo should not be read as history of the muffler maker, Fujitsubo Giken Kogyo.

What We Could Not Verify

  • The exact founding year and month of Fujitsubo Giken Kogyo. We have only the inference from a 2024 “90th anniversary” reference, not a dated company history page.
  • Any official company statement on the origin of the name beyond it being the founding family’s surname.
  • A full English-language corporate history; most of what is documented about this company is in Japanese trade and enthusiast coverage rather than an official “history” page we could directly access.

Spotted in the Wild

This profile was prompted by a Nissan Skyline GT-R (R34 V-Spec II) that came through our stock fitted with a FUJITSUBO titanium muffler, alongside NISMO parts, RAYS TE37 wheels and Öhlins suspension. As with all of our “as described” vehicle write-ups, the muffler fitment is reported as described by the seller rather than independently measured by us. See our Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 Wheel Fitment Guide for the wheel and fitment side of that car.
