Introduction
The E90 generation is where the M3 gained a V8 and lost the E46’s tall front offset. It keeps the same 5×120 bolt pattern and the same 72.6 mm hub bore as its predecessor, which makes wheels appear interchangeable between the two. They are not — at least not without changing the front track by roughly 18 mm per side.

All E90, E92 and E93 M3s use 5×120 with a 72.6 mm hub bore, M12 x 1.5 lug bolts and 115 Nm torque, staggered front to rear.

Front ET29, rear ET23. Only 6 mm separates the axles here — much closer than the E46’s 21 mm split. The difference between generations is far larger than the difference between axles on this car.
Compared with the E46
The E46 M3 runs 8Jx18 ET47 front and 9Jx18 ET26 rear. The E90 runs 8.5Jx18 ET29 front and 9.5Jx18 ET23 rear. Both cars are 5×120 with a 72.6 mm bore, so each set physically bolts to the other car. Fitting E46 wheels to an E90 pulls the front in by 18 mm per side; fitting E90 wheels to an E46 pushes it out by the same amount. Neither is necessarily wrong, but neither is neutral.

Factory-Faithful
Verified OEM: ET27–33 front, ET21–27 rear.
- 18-inch: 8.5J ET29 front, 9.5J ET23 rear
- 19-inch: 9J ET31 front, 10J ET25 rear
- Lug bolts, M12 x 1.5, 115 Nm. Same hardware as the E46
Aftermarket Fitment
- The factory offsets are already aggressive, so this car needs far less spacer work than an E46 to fill its arches
- Common range: ET15 to ET30 front, ET10 to ET25 rear on wider rims
- Bolt length must be recalculated whenever wheel thickness or spacers change — this is a safety item on any lug-bolt car

Section 3: Selection Tips and Cautions
- Buy by axle and by generation. E46 and E90 wheels interchange physically but not geometrically
- Only 6 mm separates front and rear offsets — but the widths differ by 1J, so the wheels are still not interchangeable side to side
- Lug bolts, not studs. M12 x 1.5, 115 Nm
- 72.6 mm hub bore. Standard across BMW — but not across all 5×120 cars. The Lexus LS460 is 5×120 with a 60.1 mm bore
- Competition and lightweight packages may carry different brake hardware — verify caliper clearance before reducing diameter

The E90 M3 is the easier of the two generations to fit wheels to, precisely because BMW moved the front offset out to something closer to modern practice. The trap is the reverse of the E46’s: wheels from either car will bolt to the other, and nothing will tell you the track has changed except a tape measure.
