Introduction
The FC3S has the smallest hub bore of any car covered in this series — 59.6 mm. That single number causes more failed FC wheel purchases than anything else, because the FD3S that replaced it uses 67.1 mm on the same 5×114.3 pattern. Wheels advertised simply as “RX-7 fitment” are frequently the wrong generation.
Section 1: OEM Wheel Specifications
The FC3S uses 5×114.3 with a 59.6 mm hub bore, M12 x 1.5 lug nuts and 115 Nm torque. Unusually for a car of this era, every variant shares one offset.

Why FD wheels do not simply fit

A wheel bored to 67.1 mm for an FD will slide onto an FC hub without touching it. The bolts will still tighten, but the wheel is then centred by the bolts rather than by the hub. Hub rings can fill the gap in that direction, and they are the correct solution — but they must be the right size and in good condition. The reverse does not work at all: an FC wheel bored to 59.6 mm will not pass over an FD hub.
The offset differs too. FC is ET40, FD is ET50 — a 10 mm difference on top of the bore mismatch.
Section 2: Recommended Fitment Ranges

Factory-Faithful
Verified OEM: ET38–42 on 6J to 7J rims.
- 15-inch: 6J or 6.5J at ET40
- 16-inch: 7J at ET40 on Turbo models
- Period-correct 15 and 16-inch wheels in these widths are getting scarce — this is one of the harder sizes to source in good condition
Street and Track
- Common range: ET20 to ET38 on 8J–9J
- Hub rings are almost always needed. Very few aftermarket wheels are bored to 59.6 mm, so plan for correctly sized rings as part of the purchase
- These are scene norms, not manufacturer specifications. Measure your own car

Section 3: Selection Tips and Cautions
- 59.6 mm hub bore. The smallest in this series. Budget for hub rings on almost any aftermarket wheel
- Do not buy “RX-7” wheels without asking which generation. FC and FD differ in both bore and offset
- M12 x 1.5 lug nuts. Mazda pitch, not the Nissan M12 x 1.25
- ET40 baseline — 10 mm lower than the FD, so FC and FD aftermarket recommendations are not interchangeable either
- Check hub faces for corrosion. These cars are now forty years old at the earliest end
Fitment verification checklist:
- ✓ Confirm 59.6 mm bore, or correctly sized hub rings
- ✓ Confirm the wheel is FC spec, not FD
- ✓ Confirm M12 x 1.5 lug nuts
- ✓ Judge offsets against ET40, not the FD’s ET50
- ✓ Inspect hub faces and studs on a car of this age
Conclusion
The FC is a straightforward car to fit wheels to once you accept that its defining number is the hub bore rather than the bolt pattern. One offset across the whole range, modest widths, and a 59.6 mm centre that almost nothing else shares. Get the rings right and the rest follows.
