The Short Version

  • The FTO is 5×114.3 — a front-drive coupe on the five-stud pattern, which surprises people.
  • The Galant VR-4 changed: the early 4G63T cars (E39A, E84A) are 4×114.3; the 6A13TT EC5A and the Legnum wagon are 5×114.3.
  • The Legnum’s bore is published at 67 mm. The FTO’s and the Galant’s are marked “under investigation”.
  • FTO GPX runs 16×6.5J at +38 against the base GP’s 15×6J at +46.

Two Answers, Both Worth Knowing

The FTO first. It is a front-wheel-drive coupe with a 2.0 V6, which usually means four studs. It is 5×114.3 on every grade we checked — GS, GR, GP and GPX alike. Mitsubishi put it on the same pattern as the Lancer Evolution and the Galant.

That is good news for buyers: the FTO’s wheel pool is the large 5×114.3 one rather than a niche.

Then the Galant VR-4, which does have a changeover and it is not where you would guess. The early twin-turbo 4G63T cars — E39A and E84A — are 4×114.3. The later 6A13TT cars, the EC5A saloon and the EC5W Legnum wagon, are 5×114.3.

So “Galant VR-4” covers two bolt patterns, and the split falls with the engine change in 1996.

The Bore, and What We Can Infer

The Legnum reads 67 mm. The FTO, the early Galant and the EC5A are all marked 調査中 — under investigation.

67 mm is the Mitsubishi figure. We have confirmed it on the GTO, the Diamante, the Lancer Evolution, the Pajero Mini and now the Legnum.

So the FTO and the EC5A are very likely 67 mm too. We are not printing it, because “very likely” is how people end up with a wheel that does not seat. Measure, or ask us.

The +38 Grades

Worth noting on both cars. The FTO GPX and the Legnum VR-4 Type S both step to +38 on a 6.5J, against +46 on the base grades. That is eight millimetres further out and half an inch wider — the sporting fitment on both cars.

If you are restoring a GPX or a Type S, +46 base-grade wheels will tuck visibly.

Importing

The FTO ran 1994–2000 and is fully eligible for US import. The early Galant VR-4 is long eligible. The EC5A and the Legnum ran to 2000–2002, so cars built through August 2001 are eligible now.

None of these was sold in North America. The FTO in particular went to the UK, Ireland and New Zealand in numbers as a used import in the 2000s.

What We Could Not Verify

  • Hub bore for the FTO, the E39A and E84A Galant, and the EC5A. All marked “under investigation”.
  • The FTO GP Version R’s own page. Its wheel size matches the GPX on the index; we did not open it.
