The Short Version

  • The CR-Z is 5×114.3 on a 64 mm bore — the large-Honda hub, on a small hybrid coupe.
  • The Insight is 4×100 on both generations.
  • The ZE2 Insight bore is a published 56 mm. The ZE1’s has never been researched.
  • Two Honda hybrids from the same maker, on completely different hardware.

The CR-Z Is Not a Small-Car Fitment

This surprises people, and it is the practical point of the article.

The CR-Z is a compact two-plus-two hybrid coupe. Everything about its size says 4×100 on 56.1 mm — the Honda small-car combination used by the Civic, the CR-X and the Domani.

It is not. Both the ZF1 and the ZF2 are 5×114.3 with a 64 mm bore — the large-Honda hub shared with the Stream, the Stepwgn and the Accord.

So if you are shopping for a CR-Z, do not look in the CR-X and Civic pile. Nothing there fits.

The ZE1 Insight Is Its Own Thing

The first Insight — the aluminium-bodied two-seater from 1999, with the rear wheel spats and the 35 km/l fuel figure — is 4×100 on 14×5.5J at +45.

Its bore has never been researched, on any of its three chassis codes. That is a shame, because it is a genuinely unusual car: a mass-produced aluminium monocoque, and the sort of thing where you would like to know the hub is doing what you expect.

The ZE2 saloon that took the name a decade later keeps 4×100 and gives a real 56 mm. That figure is the standard Honda small-car bore, so the ZE1 is very likely the same — but we are not printing it. Measure it.

Sizing

CR-Z: +45 to +53 on 16 and 17-inch. It is a small car with limited arch room, so the sensible ground is 17×7J in the +40 to +48 band. The 5×114.3 / 64 mm hub gives you the whole large-Honda pool, plus the enormous general 5×114.3 market — just check the bore, because 5×114.3 wheels are commonly bored 66 mm for Nissan or 67 mm for Mitsubishi and both are loose on 64.

Insight: 4×100 at +45 to +53. Very high offsets and very narrow rims — the ZE1 in particular was designed around aerodynamic drag rather than grip. Going much below +40 will look wrong and will hurt the one thing the car is good at.

Importing

The ZE1 Insight launched in November 1999, so early cars are eligible for US import now. North America did receive it, in small numbers, and it has a following.

The CR-Z was sold in North America too, so a JDM one is a right-hand-drive curiosity rather than a unique model — the exception being the α Master Label and Final Label run-out grades, which came on the 17-inch wheel and were Japan-only. Those become eligible from 2041, so this is a long-term proposition.

What We Could Not Verify

  • Hub bore for the ZE1 Insight, on any of its three chassis codes. Confirmed unresearched.
  • Whether any CR-Z grade was offered with a factory option wheel differing from the standard fitment.
