

The Short Version
- 6×139.7 with a 106 mm hub bore on every 130-series and 185-series grade we checked, petrol and diesel, across ten years.
- The bore did not change when the wheel went from 15 inches to 16.
- Factory offsets are positive, and higher than US buyers expect: +8 on the wide-body 130 SSR-X, +30 on the narrow-body 130, +15 across the 185.
- We found no 5-lug JDM Hilux Surf grade. Every grade in the data is 6-lug.
The Offset Conversation Nobody Wants to Have
If you have come to the Surf from the American truck world, your instinct is that a 4×4 wheel has a negative offset or something close to zero, and that anything positive is a road-car number. The Japanese factory table says otherwise. The wide-body 130-series SSR-X sits at +8, the narrow-body 130 at +30, and essentially the whole 185-series range at +15.
Those are the numbers Toyota engineered the steering geometry around. Fitting a −12 or −25 aftermarket wheel — entirely normal in the American aftermarket for a truck of this size — moves the wheel a long way outboard of where the factory put it. It will bolt on and it will look the way you want it to. It also increases the scrub radius, loads the wheel bearings differently and changes how the steering behaves under braking. That is a trade, and it is worth making knowingly rather than by accident.
If you want the factory geometry with a wider wheel, stay in the +10 to +30 band and gain your width inboard where you can. If you want the wide stance, budget for the consequences.

Wide Body Versus Narrow Body
The 130-series was sold in both narrow and wide body forms, and this is the single biggest source of wrong wheel purchases on the car. The wide-body cars run a 7J rim at +8. The narrow-body cars run a 6J rim at +30. That is a difference of 22 mm of offset and half an inch of width — put the wide-body wheels on a narrow-body car and the tyre sits proud of the arch by a visible amount.
Both are the same bolt pattern and bore, so both will fit. Fitting and being correct are different questions. Identify which body you have before you buy, not after.
The 106 mm Bore
106 mm is a large hub register and it is one of the reasons a Surf feels solid on its wheels. It also means that when you buy Japanese aftermarket wheels, you are far more likely to find them already bored close to 106 than you would be on a passenger car — because Japanese 6×139.7 wheels are made for this family of vehicles specifically.
Check anyway. A 6×139.7 wheel made for a different vehicle family may have a different register, and on a heavy vehicle with a big wheel, hub-centric fitting is not decoration — it is what stops the studs carrying a load they were not designed to carry.
What Happened After the 185
The Hilux Surf name continued in Japan past the 185-series and was retired in 2009. The 4Runner then continued in North America as an independent model line with no Japanese equivalent, which means the Japanese factory tables we use simply have no data for it. In Japan, the vehicle Surf buyers moved to was the Land Cruiser Prado, not a 4Runner.
We have not verified the later generations to the standard we hold ourselves to, so we are not publishing figures for them here. If you are shopping for a post-2002 Surf or a modern 4Runner, ask us and we will check the specific chassis code rather than guess from the generation.
What We Could Not Verify
- That every JDM Hilux Surf grade is 6-lug. We found no 5-lug grade in the data we pulled, across both generations and both engine families, but there are dozens of grades and we did not check all of them. Treat “always 6-lug” as strong rather than exhaustive.
- Offsets for 130-series grades other than the wide SSR-X and the narrow standard car — the SSR Limited, YN130G and VZN130 were not individually checked.
- Anything about the post-185 generations, as above.
