On paper, the Evo X changed nothing. 5×114.3. 67.1 mm hub. M12x1.5. ET38. Exactly the numbers Mitsubishi had been using since 1996. Bolt an Evo IX wheel onto a CZ4A and it goes on without an argument.

What changed is everything around the wheel. The Evo X is roughly 100 kg heavier than an Evo IX, it moved to an 18-inch rim as standard, and on GSR and MR cars it carries a Brembo front brake package that eats most of the space inside the barrel. The fitment window did not move — but the things that fill it did.

Section 3: Brembo Clearance — The Real Constraint

This is the section that matters most on an Evo X, and it is the one most listings ignore.

GSR, MR and Final Edition cars run Brembo four-piston front calipers on 350 mm discs. That package sets a hard minimum on wheel diameter and, just as importantly, on the shape of the inner barrel. In practice:

  • 18-inch: clears comfortably. This is what the car was designed around.
  • 17-inch: clears on most — but not all — aftermarket designs. Spoke geometry near the barrel decides it. An Evo IX 8Jx17 ET38 factory wheel is the known-good case.
  • 16-inch: will not clear the Brembo package. The RS ran 16s precisely because the RS was sold without them.

So the RS wheel that bolts onto your GSR in the driveway may not turn once the caliper is in the way. If a seller offers you “genuine Evo X 16-inch wheels”, they came off an RS, and they belong on an RS.

Section 4: Weight and Load Rating

An Evo X GSR sits around 1,540 kg — meaningfully heavier than the roughly 1,400 kg Evo IX. Combined with an AWD driveline that puts torque through all four corners and a car that spends its life being driven hard, that makes wheel load rating a real specification, not a footnote.

When you are buying used Japanese wheels, look for a JWL and VIA stamp on the inside of the spoke face. JWL is the Japanese Light Alloy Wheel standard; VIA is third-party verification of it. Almost every genuine RAYS, Enkei, WORK, SSR and BBS Japan wheel carries both. A wheel with neither stamp was either made for a much lighter car or made for nobody in particular.

The factory MR wheel is a BBS forged item — it is lighter than the GSR’s Enkei cast wheel at the same 8.5Jx18 ET38 dimensions, and it is one of the few OEM Japanese wheels genuinely worth hunting on its own merits.

Section 5: The Evo IX ↔ Evo X Swap

Because the pattern, bore, thread and offset are identical, this swap works in both directions:

  • Evo IX wheels on an Evo X: 8Jx17 ET38 fits, and gives you access to cheaper and more plentiful 17-inch tyres. Verify caliper clearance first if the car has Brembos.
  • Evo X wheels on an Evo IX: 8.5Jx18 ET38 fits with no clearance concerns — the Evo IX has smaller brakes and the same arches. Half an inch more rim width means roughly 6 mm more poke per side, which is well inside the fender.

Section 6: Popular Aftermarket Sizes

  • 18×9.5 ET38–ET40 — the default Evo X upgrade. About 12 mm more poke per side than stock on a 265/35R18. Fits standard arches on most cars; lowered examples may want a fender roll.
  • 18×10 ET35 — track-oriented, usually paired with 275/35R18. Expect to roll and possibly pull the front arches.
  • 18×9 ET35 — the conservative middle ground. No arch work, noticeably better stance than stock.
  • 17×9 ET38 — the track and tyre-budget choice, but confirm Brembo clearance for the specific wheel model before you buy.

Below ET30 on a standard-bodied Evo X you are into fender-roll and camber territory. Above ET45 the wheel starts disappearing into the arch and you lose the car’s whole visual character.

Section 7: The 67.1 mm Bore, Again

The Evo X keeps the 67.1 mm hub bore that catches out so many 5×114.3 cross-shoppers. Nissan wheels (66.1 mm) physically will not fit. Toyota wheels (60.1 mm) will not fit. Subaru wheels (56.1 mm) will not fit. Only the Mazda RX-7 FD3S shares both the pattern and the bore among the well-known JDM platforms, and it runs ET50.

Aftermarket wheels are normally supplied with a larger bore and hub-centric rings. Use them — on a 1,540 kg AWD car, letting the studs carry centring load is not a saving worth making.
