

The SVX is the odd Subaru in every respect, and its wheels are no exception. In an era when the Legacy, the Impreza and the first WRX all ran 5×100, the SVX ran 5×114.3.
That single fact catches out people who assume Subarus share a pattern, and it is why an SVX cannot simply take wheels from the Legacy sitting next to it.
The Short Version
- 5×114.3 on a 56 mm bore. Not the 5×100 the rest of the range used.
- One wheel size for the entire production run: 7.5J×16 at +55. Six years, four grades, no change.
- Tyres went from 215/50R16 to 225/50R16 around 1995.
- Sold new in the United States as the SVX, 1992–1997. Import is not a question.
- Four-wheel discs across the range, and 16 inches was the only factory size — so there is no smaller-wheel precedent to lean on.
Why It Is 5×114.3
We can tell you that it is, with confidence. We cannot tell you officially why.
The community explanation, which is reasonable, is size and mass. The SVX is a flat-six grand tourer weighing between roughly 3,375 and 3,580 lb — substantially more than the Legacy, and a different class of car from the Impreza. A larger hub and a wider bolt circle follow from that.
That reasoning comes from owner forums, not from a Subaru engineering document, and we are labelling it as such. Its predecessor, the Alcyone XT6, may share the pattern — we saw a forum thread title suggesting it, but could not retrieve the content.

+55 is a high offset, and it stayed there for the whole run. If you are shopping aftermarket, that number is the constraint — the SVX’s arches were drawn around a wheel sitting well inboard, and dropping the offset significantly puts the tyre somewhere the bodywork did not anticipate.
The factory wheel is unidirectional, which means genuine sets are handed. A set of four that are all the same hand is not a set of four.
The Front-Wheel-Drive Ones
Subaru offered a front-wheel-drive SVX for the 1994 and 1995 model years only, on the L and LS grades, before reverting to all-wheel drive for 1996 and 1997.
We could not verify whether the front-drive cars use the same hub bore and offset as the all-wheel-drive ones. Different driveline hardware sometimes brings different hubs. If you have a 1994 or 1995 front-drive car, that is worth measuring rather than assuming.
Alcyone SVX and SVX Are Not Quite the Same Car
The Japanese-market car is the Alcyone SVX. Owner forums — community evidence, not a manufacturer document — report several differences from the US SVX:
- A Variable Torque Distribution all-wheel-drive system with a 35/65 front-rear default and a driver-selectable lock, where the US car used a simpler viscous limited-slip arrangement.
- A VL grade with four-wheel steering, never offered in the United States.
- Ventilated rear discs, where the US car is reported to have solid rears.
None of those necessarily changes the wheel fitment, and we found no Japanese-market wheel specification distinct from the 7.5J×16 +55. But if you are importing an Alcyone SVX rather than buying a US SVX, the brakes behind the wheel may not be the ones the American parts catalogue describes.
Brakes and Wheel Size
Four-wheel discs across the range — roughly 11.8 to 11.9 inch vented at the front, 11.3 to 11.4 inch at the rear. ABS was standard on LS and LSi and not always present on the base L.
We found no documented minimum wheel diameter. That is partly because there is nothing to compare against: 16 inches was the only size Subaru ever fitted, so no owner has had to discover whether 15 would clear. If you are considering going down, measure the caliper first — you would be the test case.
What We Could Not Verify
- Whether the hub bore is 56 or 56.1 mm. Both figures appear in reputable places. Practically the same; we could not find a Subaru document to settle it.
- Any Japan-specific wheel size or offset for the Alcyone SVX.
- Whether the XT6 shares the 5×114.3 pattern.
- Whether the front-drive 1994–95 cars share the AWD hub bore and offset.
- Whether US rear discs are solid or vented. Only the front is confirmed vented.
One more thing worth saying because it may surface in your own research: we found an AI-generated article claiming the SVX uses 5×100. It does not. If you see that figure, it is wrong.
