The Short Version

  • 5×114.3 with a 60 mm hub bore on every A70 — the 2.0 GA70, the 3.0 MA70 and the 2.5 JZA70 alike.
  • The A80 is the same pattern and the same bore. So A80 wheels bolt to an A70.
  • They are not the same wheels, though. A70 runs 15 to 16 inch at +45 to +50; A80 runs 16 to 17 inch and much wider at the rear.
  • Wide-body A70s run 16×8J at +50 on 225/50R16.

A70 and A80 Share a Hub

Buyers cross-shop these two constantly, so here is the answer plainly: the A70 and the A80 use the same bolt pattern and the same hub bore. Both are 5×114.3 on 60 mm. We confirmed the A70 across all three engine families and the A80 on an SZ grade.

What differs is the wheel itself. The A70’s widest factory fitment is 16×8J at +50. The A80 RZ runs 17×8J front and 17×9.5J rear, also around +50.

So A80 wheels will bolt to an A70, and on the rear in particular they will be an inch and a half wider than anything Toyota fitted to that car. Check arch and strut clearance before you commit — the limiting factor is bodywork, not the hub.

Standard Body Versus Wide Body

The A70 came in both, and it is the first thing to establish before buying wheels. The standard-body 2.0 sits on 15×6J at +45. The wide-body turbo cars sit on 16×8J at +50 — two inches wider and five millimetres further in.

Both bolt on to either car. Only one looks right, and on a standard-body A70 an 8J wheel will sit proud of the arch.

The Turbo A

The 1988 Turbo A is the Group A homologation special, 500 built, and it is the A70 people ask about. It does not appear as a distinct grade in the factory database — the A70 listing starts in August 1989, a year after the Turbo A launched, and the MA70 grades shown are GT Turbo, GT Turbo S and GT Turbo Limited.

So we have no verified wheel specification for the Turbo A. It is reasonable to expect it matches the other wide-body MA70 grades at 16×8J +50, and we would expect that too — but it is an inference and we are labelling it as one. If you own one, the factory wheel will tell you, and we would like to know.

Sizing

From a 16×8J +50 baseline, the common move is 17×9J to 18×9.5J in the +20 to +40 range. The A70 is a wide car with real arches and it carries a big wheel well.

The 60 mm bore is the standard Toyota rear-drive figure, so hub rings are easy to source and the wheel pool is enormous — anything made for a Soarer, a Chaser, a Crown or an A80 is the right family.

Importing

The A70 ran 1986–1993. Every one is past the US 25-year mark. North America got the A70 as the Supra Turbo, but never the JZA70 2.5 Twin Turbo R — the 1JZ car — which is the grade most people import.

What We Could Not Verify

  • The Turbo A homologation special. Not listed as a grade in the database.
  • The GA70H 2.0 Twin Turbo’s own PCD page, which we read from the index.
  • The A80 RZ’s own page. We confirmed the A80 on an SZ grade and read the RZ’s wheel sizes from the index.
