Introduction

The FD3S runs a factory offset of ET50. For a low, wide sports car that number surprises people — it is higher than a Silvia, higher than a Supra, and high enough that most aftermarket wheels marketed for JDM cars will sit noticeably further out than Mazda intended. The other thing worth knowing before you buy: the FD’s hub bore is not the same as the FC’s, even though both are 5×114.3.

The FD3S uses 5×114.3 with a 67.1 mm hub bore, M12 x 1.5 lug nuts — note the Mazda thread pitch, which differs from Nissan’s M12 x 1.25.

FC and FD are not the same hub

The bolt pattern is identical; the centring is not. An FC wheel bored to 59.6 mm will not slide onto an FD’s larger 67.1 mm hub at all. An FD wheel on an FC hub will bolt up but will not be hub-centric, which on a car of this performance is not something to accept casually. Check the bore, not just the pattern.

The 67.1 mm bore also happens to match the NC-generation Miata — the only other Mazda in this series to use it.

Factory-Faithful

Verified OEM: ET48–52 on 8J to 8.5J rims.

  • 16-inch: 8J ET50 square
  • 17-inch: 8J ET50 front, 8.5J ET50 rear — the offset stays the same, only width changes
  • M12 x 1.5 lug nuts — Mazda pitch, not the Nissan M12 x 1.25

Street and Wide Body

  • Common range: ET30 to ET45 on 9J–9.5J for street cars
  • Wide body: ET15 and below on 10J and wider, with arch work to match
  • Remember the ET50 baseline. A wheel at ET35 is already 15 mm further out than factory — on many other JDM cars ET35 would be close to standard

  • Check the hub bore, not just the pattern. FC is 59.6 mm, FD is 67.1 mm
  • M12 x 1.5 lug nuts. Mazda pitch — do not use Nissan M12 x 1.25 nuts
  • ET50 is the baseline. Judge every aftermarket offset against it, not against a generic JDM figure
  • Brake clearance. Verify before dropping to 16-inch on a Turbo car
  • Values have risen sharply. On a clean FD, genuine period wheels are increasingly part of the car’s value rather than a cost
