Here is the single most expensive assumption in the R32 world: that an R32 Skyline is a 5×114.3 car.

It usually isn’t. Nissan built the R32 across nine model designations between 1989 and 1994, and only two of them use five lugs — the GT-R and the turbocharged GTS-t Type M. Every naturally aspirated GTS, every GTS-25, the AWD GTS-4, and the humble 1.8-litre GXi all left the factory on a 4×114.3 pattern.

If you are buying wheels for an R32, the chassis code on the compliance plate matters more than the badge on the boot.

Hub bore is 66.1 mm and thread is M12x1.25 across the entire R32 range regardless of bolt pattern.

The GT-R’s ET30 and the GTS-t’s ET40 are ten millimetres apart — but the GT-R also carries an inch and a half more rim and wider arches to put it under.

Section 3: How to Tell Which R32 You Have

Do not count on the seller. Count the studs, then check the code:

  • BNR32 — GT-R. RB26DETT, ATTESA E-TS AWD, wide front and rear arches. 5×114.3.
  • HCR32 — GTS-t Type M. RB20DET turbo, RWD, narrow body but with the larger four-pot front brakes. 5×114.3 on the Type M.
  • HNR32 — GTS-4. RB20DET with AWD. Despite the drivetrain, 4×114.3.
  • ECR32 / ER32 — GTS-25. RB25DE, naturally aspirated. 4×114.3.
  • HR32 / FR32 — base GTS, GTE and GXi. 4×114.3.

The GTS-4 catches people out most often. It is turbocharged, it is all-wheel drive, it looks like a baby GT-R — and it has four lugs.

Section 4: The 66.1 mm Hub Bore

Every R32 centres on 66.1 mm, the Nissan standard that carries through the S13, S14, S15, R33, R34, Z32 and 350Z. That makes the R32 wheel-compatible with a large slice of Nissan’s back catalogue — and specifically incompatible with the 5×114.3 cars from other makers:

  • Toyota (Supra, MR2, Chaser) — 60.1 mm bore. A Nissan wheel is too small to fit over a Toyota hub only in the other direction; a 60.1 mm Toyota wheel will not go onto an R32.
  • Mitsubishi Evo — 67.1 mm bore. An Evo wheel is 1 mm too large and will sit lug-centric, not hub-centric. Use rings, or use something else.
  • Mazda RX-7 FD3S — 67.1 mm. Same issue.

The direction of the error matters: a wheel with a larger bore than the hub can be centred with a ring. A wheel with a smaller bore cannot be fitted at all without machining. See our Lancer Evolution guide for the mirror image of this problem.

Section 5: Popular Aftermarket Sizes

GT-R (BNR32)

  • 17×9 ET22–ET30 — the classic period fitment. Volk TE37, RAYS Gram Lights, WORK Meister. 235/45R17 or 255/40R17.
  • 18×9.5 ET22 — modern proportions on the standard arches. Expect to roll the rear lip on a lowered car.
  • 18×10 ET15 and beyond — over-fender territory. Beautiful, but a body project, not a wheel purchase.

GTS-t Type M (HCR32)

  • 17×8 ET30–ET35 — fills the narrow arch without rubbing. The sensible choice.
  • 17×9 ET25 front / 17×9.5 ET18 rear — the drift-influenced staggered setup, usually with a fender roll and a little camber.

The GTS-t is the narrow-body car, so it reaches its limit far earlier than a GT-R does. Roughly 10 mm of extra poke per side over the factory ET40 is the point at which stock arches start to protest.

Section 6: What Fits From Other Nissans

Because the bore and thread match, wheels from these cars will physically bolt to an R32 — whether they suit it is a separate question:

  • S14 / S15 Silvia: 5×114.3, 66.1 mm, typically ET40–45. Fits, sits conservatively. See our S15 guide.
  • R33 / R34 GT-R: 5×114.3, 66.1 mm, 9J ET30. Fits an R32 GT-R beautifully — and is 1–2 inches larger in diameter.
  • Z32 300ZX: 5×114.3, 66.1 mm. Fits.

Before anything else: count the studs. Then diameter, width, offset, bore. An R32 is one of the most rewarding cars in Japan to put wheels on, and one of the easiest to get wrong on the very first specification.
