The Short Version
- 5×114.3 at +50 on every X81 grade and all three badges.
- The hub bore has never been researched. Not one row, not one badge.
- Nothing is staggered. The 1JZ-GTE grades run the same wheel front and rear.
- The turbo grades get 16×6.5J against 14×5.5J or 15×6J on the rest.
The Number We Cannot Give You
This is a high-demand car and we would rather disappoint you accurately than satisfy you wrongly.
We read the whole Chaser model page — 196 rows, spanning the X80/X81 through to the JZX100 — and the hub bore column is empty on every single one. We then checked the Mark II and Cresta pages and found the same. We opened individual grade pages, including the JZX81 GT Twin Turbo, and they print 調査中 — under investigation.
This is different from the badge-twin gaps we have found elsewhere, where one page has the figure and its twin does not. Here all three badges are equally unresearched. It is not a data-entry oversight on one page; the whole model line has never been measured for this database.
Toyota’s large-car figure is 60 mm — we confirmed it on the Soarer Z20, the Crown Comfort and elsewhere. An X81 almost certainly uses it. We are not printing it as fact, because “almost certainly” is exactly how the wrong numbers we spend this series correcting get started. Measure your hub — our reference explains how — and you will know more than the database does.

+50, Not +40
Worth internalising because it is the practical difference between this car and its rivals. The X81 sits at +50 across every grade. The contemporary Laurel sits at +40, and the F31 Leopard at +25.
Ten millimetres against the Laurel and twenty-five against the Leopard is a lot on a car this size. If you are cross-shopping wheels from other JDM saloons of the era, the X81 wants a higher offset than most of them ran, and a wheel that suits an S13 or a Laurel will sit noticeably proud on this car.
Aftermarket X81 builds almost universally go lower — the common ground is 17×9J to 18×9.5J in the +15 to +35 range — but do that knowingly rather than by accident.
Not Staggered — and When That Changed
We looked specifically, because the 1JZ-GTE grades are exactly the kind of car that gets a wider rear.
Across the whole Chaser page, 19 rows are staggered and all 19 are JZX100 Tourer V Grand Package — 6.5J×16 at +50 front, 7.5J×16 at +55 rear. Not one X81 row is staggered.
So on an X81, a matching set of four is correct. The JZX100 is where that stops being true, and only on one grade. We keep the full list in our staggered fitment reference.
All Three Badges Are the Same Car
Mark II, Chaser and Cresta were sold through three Toyota dealer channels. We compared all three pages grade by grade and the wheel size, offset and bolt pattern match exactly. There is no fitment reason to prefer one badge.
That is worth stating because we have repeatedly found badge twins where the data diverges — Carina ED versus Corona EXiV, Wingroad versus AD Wagon, Corsa versus Corolla II. Here they agree, including in what they do not know.
Importing
The X81 ran from 1988 to 1992 and the entire generation is now eligible for US import. None of the three badges was sold in North America.
The JZX81 2.5 GT Twin Turbo is the grade people want — it is the first 1JZ-GTE Mark II family car, and considerably cheaper than a JZX90 or JZX100. The GX81 1G-GTE Twin Turbo is the overlooked one.
What We Could Not Verify
- Hub bore, for any X81 grade on any badge. Explicitly unresearched, confirmed on individual grade pages.
- Tyre sizes for the non-turbo grades, which the database mostly leaves blank.
