The Short Version
- 4×114.3 on every R30 and R31 grade we could find — including the DR30 RS-Turbo and the limited GTS-R.
- The five-lug era does not start until the R32, and even there it is grade-dependent: the GT-R and GTS4 are 5×114.3 while the base GTS-type S stayed on four lugs.
- Neither Japanese factory database covers the R30 or the R31 at all. Their Skyline coverage begins with the R32 in May 1989.
- No source gives a hub bore for either generation.
The Changeover Everybody Places Too Early
We went looking for the point at which the Skyline moved from four studs to five, expecting to find it inside the R31. It is not there.
RS Watanabe’s matching data — the only priority source that covers these cars at all — lists the HR30 and DR30 non-turbo, the DR30 RS-Turbo with the FJ20ET, the R31 7th GTS and the limited-run R31 GTS-R all at 4×114.3. Not one of them is five-lug.
The change arrives with the R32, and even then it is not clean. The GT-R and the GTS4 are 5×114.3; the base GTS-type S remained 4×114.3. That is why five-lug conversions are such a standard job in the R32 world — a lot of R32s left the factory with four studs.
So the useful rule is: if it is an R30 or an R31, it is four-lug. If it is an R32, ask which grade.

Note the GTS-R’s numbers: +8.5 front and +3 rear. That is an aggressive homologation-special fitment and it is nothing like the ordinary 7th GTS at +21.
The Gap We Have to Report
We normally build these guides from Japanese factory wheel tables. For the R30 and R31 there are none. We checked both databases directly: their Skyline coverage begins in May 1989 with the R32. There is no R31 page, no R30 page, nothing before that date.
That means everything above comes from a wheel manufacturer’s fitment chart rather than from Toyota-style factory data. RS Watanabe is a good source — they machine wheels for these cars — but it is aftermarket fitment guidance, not a factory specification, and it gives no hub bore.
So: no hub bore figure exists for the R30 or R31 in any source we found. If you own one, measure the register and tell us; we will publish it with credit.
Sizing
These are 15-inch cars with narrow arches and period geometry. The sensible window is 15 to 16 inch, 7J to 8J, in the +10 to +25 range — which is where the classic Japanese four-lug wheels sit anyway.
Because 4×114.3 is a period pattern rather than a modern one, the wheel pool is mostly 1970s and 1980s Japanese product. That is good news if you want the correct look and awkward if you want a modern lightweight wheel.
Importing
The R30 ran 1981–1985 and the R31 1985–1989. Both are decades past the US 25-year mark. Neither was sold in North America.
What We Could Not Verify
- Hub bore for any R30 or R31 grade. No source gives a number.
- Factory tyre sizes. RS Watanabe gives wheel and offset only.
- Whether any late or special-edition R31 — Passage, Autech — used five lugs. Not found in any source.
- The R32 grade-naming mismatch: the factory databases show the HCR32 GTS-t Type M as 4×114.3 while RS Watanabe’s GTS4 / GTS-M line reads 5×114.3. Probably different grades rather than a contradiction, but we did not resolve it.
