Introduction

Subaru changed the STI’s bolt pattern in the middle of a generation. A 2002 STI and a 2006 STI look similar, share a chassis code family, and take completely different wheels. On top of that, the base Impreza never made the change at all. If you buy STI wheels by model name rather than by year, there is a real chance they will not bolt on.


Section 1: OEM Wheel Specifications

Every car below shares a 56.1 mm hub bore and M12 x 1.25 lug nuts. The bolt pattern is what moves.

The 2003–2005 facelift is the transition window. Cars from that period appear with both 5×100 and 5×114.3 fitments, so the model year alone does not settle it. Count and measure the studs on the actual car before buying.

The base Impreza stayed on 5×100. A non-STI GD Impreza is 5×100 with the same 56.1 mm hub bore — so STI wheels from a later car will not fit it, even though the two look closely related.

Why Subaru offsets feel wrong

Subaru runs ET53 to ET55 from the factory. That is high — roughly 10 mm higher than a comparable Nissan or Toyota of the same era. The practical consequence is that a wheel with a “normal” ET40 will sit about 13 mm further outboard on a Subaru than the factory intended. That is enough to change arch clearance noticeably, and it is why so many Subaru owners end up needing more camber than they expected.


Section 2: Recommended Fitment Ranges

Factory-Faithful

Verified OEM range: ET51–ET57 on 7J to 8.5J rims.

  • GD STI: 7.5JJx17 or 8JJx17 at ET53
  • VA STI: 8.5Jx18 at ET55, or 8.5Jx19 on the S207
  • Brembo clearance: STI models with the factory Brembo package need care below 17-inch

Aftermarket Fitment

  • Common range: ET35 to ET48 on 8.5J–9.5J, which already sits further out than factory
  • Do not treat ET40 as neutral on a Subaru. It is 13–15 mm more aggressive here than the factory figure
  • These are scene norms, not manufacturer specifications. Measure your own car

Section 3: Selection Tips and Cautions

  • Check the studs, not the badge. 5×100 and 5×114.3 STIs exist within the same generation
  • Base Impreza is 5×100. Later STI wheels will not fit it
  • 56.1 mm hub bore throughout. Small for the class — many aftermarket wheels need hub rings
  • M12 x 1.25 lug nuts. Same pitch as Nissan, not the M12 x 1.5 used by Toyota and Honda
  • Brembo brakes limit diameter. Verify caliper clearance before buying 17-inch wheels for a Brembo-equipped car
  • Account for the high factory offset when comparing against wheels advertised for other makes

  • ✓ Confirm hub rings for the 56.1 mm bore
  • ✓ Confirm M12 x 1.25 nuts
  • ✓ Check Brembo caliper clearance before reducing diameter
  • ✓ Remember factory ET53–55 when judging whether an offset is conservative

Conclusion

The STI is the clearest example in this series of why bolt pattern alone is not an answer. Two cars from the same generation can take different wheels, and the base model never followed the change. Establish the pattern on your own car first, then work from Subaru’s unusually high factory offsets rather than from what looks normal elsewhere.
