Mazda RX-3 and RX-2 Wheel Fitment Guide: 4×110, and It Carries Into the SA22C

The Short Version

  • 4×110 with M12×P1.5 threads on the Savanna RX-3, per RS Watanabe.
  • The same 4×110 carries straight into the first-generation SA22C RX-7. That is the most useful thing on this page.
  • No hub bore anywhere — and the row is silent rather than marked, which is different from the Cosmo two lines above it.
  • The RX-2 is not in any source we checked. Our own note calling it inferred rather than sourced is confirmed as the honest state of the evidence.

Note the RX-3 is staggered: 6.5J at +14.5 front, 7J at +8 rear. That is a period rear-drive fitment and it is the shape most owners are chasing.

The Chassis Code Discrepancy

Our own notes carried the RX-3 as S102A. RS Watanabe lists it as S124. We could not resolve which is correct, or whether they denote different sub-variants — the 10A and 12A engine cars are a plausible explanation and an unconfirmed one.

We are reporting the discrepancy rather than picking a side, because if you are searching a parts catalogue the code you use determines what you find.

The Missing Hub Bore, and What the Silence Means

RS Watanabe’s Mazda page gives the Eunos Cosmo, two rows above the RX-3, an explicit note: ハブ穴φ67加工 — hub bore machined to 67 mm. The RX-3 row has nothing.

We have argued before — in our Hakosuka guide — that this silence is informative rather than accidental. Watanabe’s tapered-seat wheels locate on the nut, not the hub, so the bore only has to clear. They flag it when machining is needed and stay quiet when it is not.

There is a caveat worth passing on. RS Watanabe’s own page carries a general warning about old cars: parts get swapped over fifty years, so pay particular attention to hub bore, PCD and nut pitch. On a 1970s rotary that has been through several owners, the car in front of you may not be the car in the table.

The RX-2 Gap

We looked properly and found nothing for the RX-2 or the 1970s Capella Rotary. RS Watanabe does not list it. The Japanese factory databases begin their Mazda coverage decades later — there are no Savanna, RX-3, RX-2 or early Capella entries at all.

The only “Capella” in RS Watanabe’s table is the Capella Cargo, a 1999 commercial van at 4×114.3, which has nothing to do with the rotary car.

So if you own an RX-2: measure everything. We will publish what you find.

Buying Wheels for These Cars

4×110 is a period Mazda pattern and it is not shared widely. The practical consequence is that your wheel market is largely 1970s Japanese product — which is exactly right for the car, and limiting if you want something modern.

The strongest fact in this guide is the continuity into the SA22C RX-7. Both cars are 4×110 with M12×P1.5, so wheels made for a first-generation RX-7 are the correct family for an RX-3, and the RX-7 pool is considerably larger.

Importing

The RX-3 ran 1971–1978 and the RX-2 1970–1978. Both are decades past the US 25-year mark. Both were sold new in the United States, so the shape is familiar there.

What We Could Not Verify

  • Hub bore for the RX-3 or the SA22C. No source publishes a figure.
  • RX-2 bolt pattern, bore, wheel size — everything. Absent from all three priority sources.
  • Whether S102A and S124 denote the same car.
  • Factory wheel sizes as opposed to RS Watanabe’s recommended fitments. What we have is a wheel maker’s chart, not a Mazda specification.

Bolt pattern: 4 × 110, not 114.3

We could not find a factory wheel width or offset for these cars in any source we would publish from — not Mazda’s own centenary museum pages, which carry only descriptive text, and not any service-manual scan we could read. That gap stands.

What we can now confirm is the bolt pattern, and it is not the one most people assume. RS Watanabe’s own vehicle matching table lists the Savanna RX-3 (S124) as PCD 110 mm, four holes, with M12 × P1.5 wheel bolts.

That matters because 110 mm is not a Japanese pattern anyone expects. It is 4.3 mm smaller than the 114.3 mm circle that became the Nissan and Toyota standard, and a 114.3 wheel will start two bolts and refuse the other two. If you are shopping for a Savanna, filter for 4 × 110 and ignore everything else.

We have added this to the rare-patterns reference. We could not find an equivalent entry for the Capella RX-2 and are not carrying the RX-3 figure across to it.
