The wheels carry a Mazdaspeed badge, but Mazdaspeed never made a wheel. That contradiction is the whole story of the MS01.
Who Actually Built It
Mazdaspeed operated as an independent tuning and parts company — a Tokyo dealer-backed shop, not a Mazda factory division — until Mazda absorbed it in 1999 (see our full Mazdaspeed brand history for that timeline). The MS01 wheel line was sold under the Mazdaspeed name during that independent era, but according to enthusiast research on the UK MX-5 Owners Club forum, the casting itself was made by RAYS and simply rebranded for Mazdaspeed’s catalogue. We could not locate a Japanese-language primary source (a RAYS or Mazdaspeed corporate archive) that confirms this manufacturing relationship directly — the claim rests on forum-level enthusiast research, which we are citing as such, not as verified fact.
What is clearer: the MS01 was never a genuine Mazda factory option. The same forum research states it does not appear in the Eunos Shop Options catalogue, the period parts-and-accessories list for Eunos-badged Mazda dealers. That makes it an aftermarket wheel sold through the Mazdaspeed channel, not a Mazda factory fitment.
What Our Set’s Markings Actually Show
We’re not relying on the “MS01” name alone. Our in-stock 4-wheel set carries manufacturer-cast size and offset markings on the barrel of each wheel, which we read directly off the metal:
- Two wheels: 17×8.0JJ, offset +35
- Two wheels: 17×9.0JJ, offset +34
- Bolt pattern: 5×114.3
- Casting date stamp: 1996.6.25
One identification note worth flagging: enthusiast sources describe genuine MS01R wheels as carrying a separate “MS01R” adhesive sticker on the face or barrel — and also note that reproduction Mazdaspeed sticker sets, cut to the same size and die shape as the originals, are sold separately. That means a sticker alone does not prove authenticity. The cast size/offset markings and overall casting quality are the more reliable check, which is why we’re reporting the stamped numbers rather than leaning on branding alone.
Fitment Varies by Set — This Is Not One Fixed Size
Unlike a wheel designed for a single chassis, the Mazdaspeed MS01 line turns up in more than one size depending on which Mazda sports car it was paired with:
- 17×8.0J / 17×9.0J, 5×114.3 — our set, offsets +35 / +34.
- 18×8J, 5×114.3, offset +40 — a set documented on the Mazdas247 forum, where the seller speculated (without confirming) that it came off an RX-8.
- 18×10J / 18×11J — a re-barreled pair shown fitted to a modified FD3S RX-7 on Mazda Fitment’s site, with no bolt pattern or offset given in that source.
- Smaller/narrower MS01 and MS01R examples are also documented on NA-generation Eunos Roadster (MX-5) cars in UK owners’ club threads — but that chassis uses a 4×100 bolt pattern, different from the 5×114.3 on our set. The two are not interchangeable.
In short: “MS01” names a wheel line sold across multiple Mazda sports-car platforms over different model years, not one fixed spec. Always match bolt pattern, offset, and hub bore against the specific car — not the model name cast into the wheel.
What We Could Not Verify
- We could not confirm RAYS as the manufacturer from a RAYS or Mazdaspeed corporate source — this comes from enthusiast forum research, not a company statement.
- We could not confirm which specific Mazda model/year our 17×8 / 17×9, 5×114.3 set was originally sold for. The 5×114.3 pattern rules out the NA/NB Eunos Roadster, but we could not pin down a single confirmed factory pairing (candidates discussed by enthusiasts include the RX-8 and widebody FD3S RX-7 builds, at different sizes than ours).
- We could not confirm whether “MS01” and “MS01R” denote genuinely distinct product lines or simply a casting/sticker revision of the same wheel.
- We could not verify an exact end date for Mazdaspeed-badged MS01 sales, beyond the general 1999 Mazda-absorption date covered in our Mazdaspeed brand history.
