The Short Version
- The real price gap is forged versus cast, not brand versus brand. At 18 inch, forged wheels from any of the three cost roughly double cast ones. Comparing a WORK cast wheel to a BBS forged one and concluding something about the brands is a category error.
- BBS Japan makes nothing but forged wheels. No casting in the Japanese lineup at all.
- RAYS is the only one of the three that prints a load rating on every size line, and the only one with a named in-house standard split by construction method.
- WORK’s distinguishing capability is multi-piece configurability, not a material story.
- All three manufacture in Japan, and all three publish where. We list the plants below.
This article is about the three as products. For company histories see our separate profiles for WORK, RAYS and BBS.
How Each One Actually Makes a Wheel
| BBS | RAYS | WORK | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Process | Forging only (鍛造). No cast product in the Japanese lineup. | Both. Volk Racing is forged one-piece; gramLIGHTS, HOMURA, TEAM DAYTONA, VERSUS, VMF and A-LAP are predominantly cast. | Both, split by tier. Cast for the mainstream range, forging for flagships and bespoke work, flow forming on selected cast lines. |
| Flow forming | — | used on selected lines | branded WFT, WORK Flowforming Technology |
| Own claim | forging ratio of 4 or more — the billet compressed to a quarter or less | labels every product sheet 鍛造1ピース or 錳造1ピース | names two forging sub-methods, die forging and solid forging |
| Press scale disclosed | Yes: 5,000 t in 1983, 9,000 t in 2005 for 22 inch, 12,000 t in 2019 for 24 inch | reported but we could not confirm — see caveat | not disclosed in tonnage |
| Plants | Takaoka City and Yokkaichi, plus a dedicated 16,500 m² paint factory opened 2019 | in-house forging and casting | Okayama First and Second (Mimasaka City), Sakai Factory, Shiki Factory (Yao City) — all ISO 9001 |
The BBS point deserves emphasis because English-language content gets it wrong constantly. BBS Japan and BBS GmbH in Germany are separate companies. The German operation makes cast wheels for the European market; those products do not appear in the Japanese catalogue. So if you are buying BBS from Japan, forged is not a grade you select — it is the only thing they make. That is a stronger guarantee than most buyers realise they are getting.
On RAYS, we have seen a forging plant location and a press tonnage reported, but the page carrying it would not render for us and we are not going to publish a number we could not read at the source. What we can confirm from RAYS’ own product pages is which individual models are forged and which are cast, because RAYS labels every single one.
Standards, and Who Publishes What
All three meet JWL and VIA for the Japanese market. What differs is what each publishes above that line.
RAYS names its in-house standard JWL+R, and splits it in two: Spec 1 for its own cast wheels and Spec 2 for its own forged sport wheels. Spec 2 roughly doubles JWL’s fatigue-cycle and impact requirements. You can see which one applies on the product page — the gramLIGHTS 57DR-X sheet prints Spec 1, the TE37 SAGA S-plus sheet prints Spec 2.
BBS states it holds a strict in-house quality standard but, as far as we could find, does not give it a name.
WORK lists the specific tests it runs beyond the legal minimum — rotational bending fatigue, radial load endurance, impact, and a vertical impact test of its own devising — but likewise does not brand them collectively.
Then there is the detail we think is genuinely the most useful thing in this article. RAYS prints a load rating in kilograms against every single size it sells. BBS’s spec tables give wheel weight but no load figure. WORK’s give size, offset, PCD and price, with no load column.
If you are fitting wheels to something heavy — a Land Cruiser, an Alphard, a loaded van — that column is the number that matters, and only one of the three gives it to you. Worth noting that the same column is frequently misread as the wheel’s own weight. It is not. We wrote about that confusion separately.
The Sub-Brand Map
This is the practical map buyers usually lack. One line each.
RAYS
- VOLK RACING — the flagship forged racing line, home of the TE37 family.
- gramLIGHTS — cast street and off-road sport, including SUV and van fitments.
- HOMURA — accessible street sport, positioned below Volk Racing.
- VERSUS — VIP and luxury deep-dish styling for premium sedans.
- VMF — minivan-focused, aimed at the Alphard and Vellfire class.
- TEAM DAYTONA — truck, SUV and off-road, including Jimny-specific fitments.
- A-LAP — compact and kei oriented.
WORK
- EMOTION — street sport with drift-scene roots; cast or WFT flow-formed.
- MEISTER — the heritage line, offered as true one, two and three-piece.
- SCHWERT and GNOSIS — mesh designs, the latter newer.
- ZEAST — 3D concave, design-forward.
- VS-series — the classic deep-dish two and three-piece wheels.
- CRAG T-GRABIC — off-road and rally.
- Lanvec — a quieter, more restrained look than EMOTION or ZEAST.
- RIZALTADO — kei and compact, cast with a forged-like silhouette.
- SION — full bespoke, one-off commissions.
BBS does not do this. It sells roughly twenty concurrent model lines — RS, RG, LM, LM-R, RS-GT, SUPER-RS, RI-A, RI-D, RE-V and so on — differentiated by construction and material rather than by brand personality. That flatter architecture is itself a difference worth noticing: with BBS you are choosing a wheel, and with the other two you are choosing a line first.
Multi-Piece
WORK is the specialist. True one, two and three-piece across MEISTER, SCHWERT and the VS series, with published rim-width and inset combinations that imply the disc and rim are paired to order.
BBS makes forged two-piece extensively — LM, LM-R, RS-GT, SUPER-RS — and the historic RS and RG were three-piece. Rims and discs are not catalogue items you buy separately.
RAYS is now almost entirely one-piece forged in Volk Racing; true multi-piece is a small legacy share of the range.
If you care about rebuilding or re-dishing later, that ordering matters. We covered what the manufacturers will and will not actually do for you in our three-piece rebuild guide.
What They Cost
| Wheel | Construction | Size | Published JP price, per wheel |
|---|---|---|---|
| BBS LM | forged 2-piece | 18×7.5J | ¥155,100 incl. tax |
| BBS RS-GT | forged 2-piece | 18×7.5J | ¥151,800 incl. tax |
| RAYS TE37 SAGA S-plus | forged 1-piece | 18×7.5J | ¥113,300 incl. tax |
| WORK VS-KF | 3-piece, standard colour | 18×8.0JJ | about ¥79,200 incl. tax |
| RAYS gramLIGHTS 57DR-X | cast 1-piece | 18×8J | ¥64,900 incl. tax |
Read that table by construction and the pattern is obvious. Forged product from BBS or RAYS lands between roughly ¥113,000 and ¥155,000 at 18 inch. Cast product is around ¥65,000. The gap between a forged wheel and a cast one is bigger than the gap between any two brands.
So How Should You Think About Them
Buy BBS when you want certainty. Everything in the Japanese catalogue is forged and made in Japan, with no grade to get wrong. You pay for that.
Buy RAYS when you want the data. It is the only one that tells you, per size, what the wheel is rated to carry and which of its own two standards the wheel was built to. If you are fitting to something heavy, or you want to be able to justify a choice rather than assert it, RAYS makes that possible.
Buy WORK when you want configurability. Nobody else offers the same breadth of genuine multi-piece with rim and disc paired to order, and the range spans a much wider set of vehicle types.
And whichever you choose, decide forged or cast first. That decision costs more than the badge does.
What We Could Not Verify
- RAYS’ forging plant location and press tonnage. Reported, but the page would not render for us and we did not read it at source.
- Whether BBS’s in-house standard has a formal name. We checked their technology, craftsmanship and news pages and found none. Treated as a confirmed absence, but a direct enquiry to BBS Japan would be a higher bar than we cleared.
- Whether WORK’s in-house test regime has a formal collective name. Same treatment.
- Current WORK per-size prices for the EMOTION and MEISTER lines. WORK’s price tables would not fetch reliably; we only secured a live table for the VS-KF.
